“The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.”
(Luke 24:34-35 ESV)

While walking along the road to Emmaus (see Luke 24:13-35), two disciples met a stranger who came alongside and proceeded to travel on with them. The stranger was actually the risen Lord but they did not recognize Him. As they walked along, He reviewed all of the Scriptures which referred to Himself, the Messiah. What an awesome Bible study that must have been!

As evening drew near, the disciples finally came to their home and invited the stranger to spend the night with them. They sat together to share the evening meal and when the stranger took the bread, broke it, and passed it to them, their eyes were miraculously opened to recognize Him as the risen Lord Jesus!

At the Last Supper, Jesus taught us to remember Him in the breaking of the bread and in the sharing of the cup (see Matthew 26:17-30) and we still share this meal with our Lord today through Holy Communion. For when we eat the bread and drink the cup, we proclaim His death and resurrection until He comes again in glory! We remember His sacrifice for us on the cross and His triumphant victory over the grave! We experience a spiritual communion with Him as we remember and celebrate!

We can also have this spiritual communion with Him at all times. Jesus is with us always and all we need to do is to ask and - like the disciples on the road to Emmaus - our eyes will be miraculously opened to recognize His presence!

HAPPY EASTER! HE IS RISEN! ALLELUIA!

Lord, we proclaim Your death and resurrection until You come again in glory! We thank You for opening our eyes to see You and to know You! And we cherish the spiritual communion we have with You at all times! May we always recognize Your presence! In Your Holy Name we pray, Amen. †
